OC Robotics/Magnox - Dragon LaserSnake Deployment
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
A laser-cutting robotic snake has been put to work on the highly radioactive core of the redundant DRAGON reactor. The long, flexible LaserSnake passed through a narrow hole in the three meter thick concrete around the core. It sliced through a 400mm diameter vessel attached to the reactor core at Winfrith in Dorset.

LaserSnake2 - Laser cutting for nuclear decommissioning at Sellafield - a world first.
Просмотров 22 тыс.7 лет назад
This film shows a world first: the LaserSnake (a snake-arm robot with a laser cutter) successfully dismantling redundant equipment in a radioactive area of a nuclear facility. Working in a reprocessing plant at Sellafield, the LaserSnake was used by OC Robotics and TWI, together with Sellafield, to cut up a dissolver vessel. The culmination of a project part-funded by Innovate UK, this versatil...

As part of the LaserPipe feasibility study, the team investigated a number of applications for this technology. One such application is the welding of pipe sections accessible only through pressure vessels, or manifold, maintenance ports. This animation is one such example where a snake-arm robot could provide a solution to difficult access. www.ocrobotics.com/laserpipe/ ruclips.net/video/jpbOE...

Unironically an amazing piece of tech. Now the engineers won't have excuses about not being able to inspect hard to access areas of planes and other large equipment. And they won't have excuses about maintenance either.

Please wait while we calibrate... the Nozzle. Please do not look away from... the Nozzle. The Nozzle is now calibrating. The Nozzle is still calibrating. The Nozzle has completed calibration. Thank you.

OK, but if you want to test me, you have to provide actual range values for θ, slew rates and so forth - trust me, I'd take the test - trying to build elephant trunks to mount each camera in linked project (shift from outer rigid to inner rigid) - much better/denser visual model than structured light (ex Project Tango invitee) - even at small scale, with 135 Kg monofilament and nitinol and 3dprinting, math foundation and process control is tough and I could use a test :-) So by all means, please do a video test for real. Just put a good study guide in the description :-) I just think about the weight of your system and some of the rotational physics and cringe. I'm _never_ going beyond lightweight :-D hackaday.io/project/21966-quamera

The snake-arm works by actuating steel cables, much like the human spine works. The strength and accuracy of the arm is limited by the tensile strength of the cables, the rigidity of the segments and their joints, and the actuators on the back. You seem to use electric motors for the actuators. Are there plans on releasing a version where the actuation is done by pneumatic motors, for higher strength and accuracy? I assume it would be rather costly. The reason I ask is, because the arm seems a bit jittery. Unless you compensate for that at the head with some sort of alignment like a chicken-head, I see this jittery producing uneven sealant, which isn't a problem with the current hydraulic arms.

This robo-arm is totally awesome, and after some fine tuning, I could see it being used in nearly every industry! It certainly looks cheaper and more versatile than most CNC-styled robo-arms out today.
